USAA offers not only insurance but also bank accounts, credit cards, mortgages and other financial products for military families.
Family Survivor Benefits
The company’s homeowners policies have many features tailored to the needs of military policyholders. Unlike most insurers, USAA covers your personal belongings even if they are damaged by combat action and does not reduce your coverage for an empty home while you are deployed. It also covers military uniforms without exception for service members on active or reserve duty.
USAA has home-sharing coverage standard for those who rent out their home on vacation rental websites (which is handy if you want a little extra income during an expansion).
Although USAA homeowners policies are available in every state and Washington, D.C., coverage options can vary by location.
AFI sells its own military home insurance policies and policies of partner companies. Members can choose their preferred rate and package.
Military Id Cards
The company offers various ways to customize your policy. Optional endorsements include coverage for identity theft, water backup damage and valuable personal items such as jewelry.
The following companies sell insurance to a wide population, but offer special discounts for veterans and members of the military.
Farmers Insurance offers discounts of 2% to 8% for active, retired, reserve and honorably discharged military members. Discount varies by state and may not be available everywhere.
Liberty Mutual offers savings on homeowners insurance for active, retired or reserve members of the military in some states.
How To Choose Homeowners Insurance
Remember that you may find cheaper home insurance with another company, even if the military doesn’t offer a discount. Each insurer calculates its rates slightly differently, so it’s worth seeking home insurance quotes from at least three companies.
It’s never a bad idea to read your homeowners policy carefully to make sure you understand your coverage, but it’s especially important for military members who expect to be deployed. You may find some gaps in the coverage that you want to know about.
For example, homeowners policies usually provide at least some coverage for your personal belongings while you’re away from home, but they usually exclude war-related damage. So if you are deployed to a combat zone, you may not have adequate coverage for the clothing and personal effects you bring with you. As noted above, the USAA exclusion does not cover up to $10,000 of items lost due to war.
You should also note the gap clauses in your policy. If you’re insured with a company other than USAA, certain types of coverage may be limited after your home has been vacant for at least 30 or 60 days. If you expect your deployment to be longer than that and no one else will be living in your home, discuss your options with your insurer.
Guide To Military Family Insurance Options
Some people choose to rent out their home to others during an expansion. If you choose this alternative, you may need to exchange your homeowners policy for an owner’s or renter’s residence policy to ensure your home is properly covered. Again, your agent or insurer can advise you.
