Here’s What Happens To Your Body When You Drink Less

Alcohol consumption has been part of human culture for thousands of years. But while we have a general understanding of the effects of alcohol—most people can recognize the point at which one drink is too many—the specifics of what happens to your body with each drink are actually quite complex.

We’ve broken down some of the alcohol consumption research to show you what happens to your body and brain when you start (and after) drinking.

If you’re trying to calculate how much you’ve drunk, it’s important to remember that a standard drink, as defined by the researchers, is a 1.5-ounce shot of spirits (80-proof, which includes most of your standard whiskeys, gins, vodkas, tequila, and rum), a 5-ounce glass of wine (about 12% alcohol by volume) or 12 ounces of beer (about 5% alcohol by volume). But that means a pint of one of our favorite IPAS can be more like two standard drinks than one.

We described the effects based on blood alcohol content (BAC) rather than the number of drinks, because a given number of drinks affects people differently depending on gender, size and other factors.

Water is such an essential component of our biology that without it we could die within three days.  What else would you expect considering that on average 60% of our body weight is water?  Making sure to drink water is not only a necessity to stay alive, but it also benefits our bodies in many ways. Some of these methods may surprise you.

We all hear that we need to drink 8-10 cups of water a day.  This is the simplest and easiest way to remember.  According to the Mayo Clinic, women need 11.7 cups, or 2.7 liters, and men need 15.7 cups, or 3.7 liters.  However, these numbers are not set in stone.  There are variables to consider to allow for some flexibility.

The really good news about the amount of water we need is that we’re not limited to just drinking water.  There are some delicious foods that contribute to our daily allowance.

Although drinking water is essential, don’t make the mistake of thinking that we can never drink too much water.  You can definitely drink too much.

How Energy Drinks Affect Your Body Within 24 Hours

Excess water dilutes the amount of sodium in your blood because your kidneys can’t remove the extra water from your body.  This is called hyponatremia and can be life-threatening.  Fortunately, this is not very common.   However, there are contests on the internet for “who can drink a gallon of water a day”.

Even if you consume “only” a gallon of water, you’re excluding a possible 20-30% of water from food or other beverages that contain water.   Remember that drinking too much water is possible and dangerous.

There are certain biological warnings that our bodies give us if we are not drinking enough water.  One of the most common signs is the color of our urine.  Your urine should be light yellow or almost clear.  Urine that is darker yellow or almost orange in color and has a strong odor is a big sign that you need to drink more water.

Our entire body needs water, including our blood.  When we don’t drink enough, our blood thickens and puts too much stress on the heart to pump oxygen and nutrients to the rest of the body.  It makes us feel tired.

What Exactly Happens To Your Body When You Drink Soda?

Be kind to your body’s largest organ and it will help you look younger.  Our skin needs moisture to maintain its elasticity.  Lotion or oils provide moisture only to the first layer of the skin.  Water is what really keeps you hydrated.

When you consume less water, your kidneys try to hold on to the available water to prevent dehydration.  As a result, you will urinate less often.  This can lead to urinary tract infections because the body does not flush out toxins and bacteria.   It can also cause water retention.

As our body is forced to survive with less water, our body begins to pull water from our muscles.  This can cause our muscles to release a chemical that begins to break down our muscles.

Not drinking enough water over a period of time can lead to various conditions that can have serious consequences for your health.  You can also be dehydrated and not “feel” thirsty.  This is because your brain has decided that for some reason you must not need the signal because you previously ignored it for a long time.

Drinking enough water every day is not a trendy concept.  Legit scientific evidence shows how important it is to our overall health.  Medical News Today points to several main reasons:

You probably don’t associate water with your joints, but they are about 80% water.   Drinking enough water ensures that your joints retain their cushioning properties.

Saliva is essential for digesting our food and helps reduce cavities and bad breath.  It is important to keep our mucous membranes hydrated to keep our eyes, nasal passages and mouth moist.  Also, if you have sinus problems, the presence of fluids helps to get rid of mucus, allowing it to drain more easily and prevent congestion.

More water means better circulation and more oxygen. Water is essential to keep our blood from thickening, which puts strain on our heart and further puts pressure on the cardiovascular system.  Our entire body depends on nutrients and oxygen reaching all our tissues, organs and our brain to function properly.  When our body is working at 100%, we feel better and have more energy.

How Your Body Transforms When You Don’t Drink Alcohol For 31 Days

As mentioned above, we get most of our skin hydration from the water we drink.  When we drink enough, the right oils are released to hydrate the skin; it makes our skin look fuller and have a healthy glow.  In addition, blood circulation to the face and limbs improves, which gives color and stimulates collagen production. Relaxing oils and increased blood flow and nutrients are also beneficial for hair growth.  Hair that doesn’t get enough water becomes dry, brittle and can cause hair loss.

To keep our body from overheating, we sweat.  As this sweat cools down, it creates a process that lowers our body temperature.  For women who are menopausal or menopausal, drinking plenty of water can reduce hot flashes compared to not drinking any fluids.   Also, staying properly hydrated can help you better handle warmer ambient temperatures without side effects.

Water helps flush out toxins in a number of ways: through sweating, through our kidneys, by facilitating waste removal from the colon, and by helping the liver filter chemicals.  These are the systems that help our immune system deal with the accumulation of bacteria and other harmful microorganisms in our body.

Better lubrication of the joints and proper flow of oxygen and nutrients to our muscles and heart are essential for our body to have endurance, stamina and build or tone muscles.  Hydration also ensures that your blood is not too thick to flow properly and that your airways are not restricted. In other words, enough water allows you to breathe better.  Exercising without enough water can be harmful by straining the heart and lungs.

A glass of water before each meal not only helps you feel full faster, but also boosts your metabolism.  As a side note, ice water causes your stomach to contract, making it easier to feel full.

Our brain needs to be able to get nutrients and oxygen to release the right hormones and shut down neurons as intended.

Our bodies will draw water from all possible sources to maintain their function and purpose. Your colon is no exception.  Your colon is designed to draw water out of you to flush out waste.  If there isn’t enough water, your colon will pull that water out of the waste.  This is one of the factors that cause the dry, hard stools associated with constipation.

Water is probably one of the most important components for our body and brain to function at 100%.  Many of us fail to drink enough water in a day.
