What Is The Role Of An Artist In Society – I came across an article yesterday where a survey in Singapore listed artists in the top five non-essential jobs. My favorite part of the article was the graphics and illustrations, which of course were created by an artist. That made me laugh a little. It also led me to pose a question to our creative community, Art is a Record, on Facebook to see what you all think about artists today.
What role does the artist have in society today? It’s been a good discussion so far, but I had too much to say to keep my answer in a comment on Facebook, so here we go.
What Is The Role Of An Artist In Society
Artists are unnecessary. If we look at life according to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, yes, art is part of self-actualization and cannot be achieved if our basic needs are not satisfied. If we put aside the idea that we must have the lower needs met in order to enjoy the higher level needs, we will clearly see that art often helps people work through things that may be lacking or difficult to deal with in the lower levels of that pyramid. .

Art will not help you with physiological needs, of course. It can certainly help you if you are dealing with issues of safety, belonging and self-esteem. Art won’t save your physical life, but it can save your mental life. Art can serve as an incredibly important tool for psychological needs for many people. Art therapy is a very real and valuable thing. It can be administered by a professional, or it can be a person who writes out our feelings. Now, I realize this has more to do with individuals being able to help themselves, rather than looking at how artists are useful in society, but stay with me here.
Artists serve two important roles in society today. First is the role of the historian. Art is a record, which by the way is the title of this blog and our Facebook group. It is also the focus of a previous blog post I wrote. Art is the way people process emotions, remember events and leave their mark on the world. People used art to record their lives before we even had written language. Case in point: the famous cave paintings at Lascaux. Those paintings were created 17,000 years ago! That’s mind blowing. Hunters and gatherers took the time to create art, and now we have a record of that time frame.
The second role of artists in society today is to be whatever the world needs it to be. When the whole world feels like a dumpster fire people need somewhere to escape. People turn to paintings, movies, books, poetry, music and more as a means of escaping the things they cannot control. Creating and consuming art gives us hope. It is an agent of change. It is a mirror to society. When the world feels unfair, art gives us the freedom to fight back. It gives us a voice greater than our own literal, singular voice.
Art is joy. Completely unnecessary to live physiologically, but they are the things worth sharing with others. Worth connecting and worth living for. If we imagine a world without artists, we are looking at a bleak, bleak world.

We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is full of passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, that’s what we live for.
I fully understand that the Singapore inquiry was about the global pandemic we are going through in 2020 and I do not disagree with it. In the words of Elizabeth Gilbert, “Nobody’s child ever died because somebody got a bad review in The New York Times. It’s just art. And no matter how beautiful art is, and no matter how much we love it, there is no real real Art Crisis .” I think those words can give us artists some freedom. Our work is completely unnecessary to live, but it is what creates our culture, sustains our mental health, and serves as a record of our existence.
In an effort to foster a creative community I started a Facebook group called Art is a Record, the same name as this blog. I’d love for you to join the fun as we discuss creative life, projects, art and life.

Every artist plays a different and necessary role in contributing to the overall health, development and well-being of our society.
Creative thinkers and doers provide their communities with joy, interaction, and inspiration, but they also provide thoughtful critique of our political, economic, and social systems—pushing communities to engage thoughtfully and take steps toward social progress.
From documenting human history to expressing collective emotions, these nine artists from around the world tell us how they view their role as creative contributors.
I am an expressive painter, working from the landscape and my memories. And yes, my work is personal, although it may not seem so at first. Feelings about my relationship with my mom, dad and family creep into the work.
The Role Of The Workshop In Italian Renaissance Art (article)
It is a human urge to express emotion through branding. We all carry with us memories of our past experiences.
An artist has the ability to ‘feel strongly’ to be ‘sensitive’ to things and express that in the paint, gesture or color. The artist ‘absorbs’ the atmosphere of a place or the memory of a feeling. Sometimes, it’s a burden for the artist to carry all this emotion – to be so sensitive.
Most people block emotion. Then, suddenly, a painting ‘speaks’ to them. At that point, the artist has done his job. For me, it’s amazing to connect with people through my work – when people respond to a painting and really “feel”. My painting is mainly about my self-expression communicated there on the canvas, but really I think it’s everyone’s expression— I’m just a vehicle.
Everyone hurts. Everyone loves Everyone hopes. And, everyone dies. Above all, art is about our own sense of mortality.
What Is The Role Of Public Art In Creating A Sense Of A City?
Lesley Birch , York, UK @ Lesley_Birch Wind by Nina Fraser Artists are responsible for finding out the truth.
I believe that the role of the artist, above all, is to be as true to themselves as they can – within society, the community, and the world in general. This sounds like a cliché but is in itself much more difficult than it seems.
Being an artist involves wearing all kinds of masks, just like any other job, but the difference is that we have the ongoing responsibility to find out the truth of things. Sometimes we will seem vulnerable, sometimes we will make mistakes. But the main thing is not to give up.
This resonates with people on a personal and global level because it is not only empowering but starts from within ourselves. Before deciding to follow my own artistic path, I co-founded a community art cafe. This was a wonderful experience in itself, but since it was not my true vocation I felt there was a limit to how much I could give. This is because I started from the outside in, trying to fix things around me, before realizing that I needed to tap into something central to myself.
The Role Of Art Dealers: Past, Present, And Future Trends
Rather than the word “role,” I prefer “engagement.” For many years as an art educator, I have helped people and communities find their voices and express their concerns through individual and collaborative art projects. This used to be called public art. Now, it is commonly known as a social practice.
My own work is rooted in feminism – where expressing my emotions, goals and ideas, in the realm of the personal, social and political, is an exercise to communicate my individual experience. Working with artists and in art spaces in other parts of the world, wonderful exchanges of ideas often occur – which creates artistic growth, empathy and new understandings.
All these actions can illuminate what lies hidden or suppressed in the margins or shadows. New ideas can be realized. These ideas can lead to small or large changes in attitudes and even society. Ginny Sykes, Chicago, USA
Holland is a crowded space. Our history is full of stories of how we made land out of water and tamed the deadly seas. Honored by writers, poets, and painters. The word ‘landscape’ comes from the Dutch word ‘landschap’: View of the earth. It was invented here in the 17th century, with low horizons
