The Take-A-Test tool uses validated mental health questionnaires to measure the frequency and severity of symptoms characteristic of various mental health conditions compared to the general population.

When your results show a “high” score, it means that you are experiencing stronger or more psychological difficulties than what is considered “healthy” or “average” compared to the general population.

This means there is a good chance you may have symptoms of depression or an anxiety condition and you should check them out with your GP or doctor.

Please note, a high score by itself does not mean you have that mental health condition or illness – these results need to be considered in the context of your overall health, lifestyle, history and what is going on in your life. Life lately.

If the Take-A-Test tool suggests multiple program options, we recommend enrolling in a program that either deals with symptoms that affect you or interfere with your life.

If testing has suggested a health program (eg, insomnia, mindfulness) and a treatment program (eg, social anxiety program), we recommend enrolling in a treatment program first because it teaches you skills to keep your symptoms under control, before improving your general well-being.

Worried about family, or politics, we all feel depressed, stressed and anxious at times. But what if these feelings are only occasional? According to the World Health Organization, more than 300 million people worldwide suffer from depression, a condition that can turn from a normal, temporary response to life’s challenges—to a serious and debilitating health problem. Chronic stress has the potential to negatively affect all systems of your body and can even lead to ailments like heart disease. (For more on the effects of chronic stress, see my post here.) Although anxiety is a normal response to stress, when it becomes overwhelming it can interfere with daily life. Anxiety disorders are so common that the National Institute of Mental Health reports that 18 percent of American adults have one. How do you know if you are one of the millions of people with a mental health problem? If you’re interested in a depression/stress/anxiety test, here are 5 ideas to help you self-diagnose.

You already know that depressed individuals sometimes struggle to get out of bed, but insomnia is also a common symptom of depression, chronic stress, and anxiety. Consider your sleeping habits. Waking up frequently in the morning or falling asleep at night is perfectly normal, but excessive sleepiness or insomnia can be a symptom of a larger mental health problem. If you have a Fitbit or other fitness tracker that automatically records your sleep duration and quality, taking a closer look at your numbers may help you spot an irregular, unhealthy pattern.

It’s nice to enjoy a cold beer after a hard day, but how often do you pour yourself a drink? Many people with mood disorders use alcohol to self-medicate. A study published in the November 2006 issue of The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease found that about 22% of participants with anxiety problems self-medicated with alcohol or other drugs, and more men than women did. Think about your drinking habits over the past two months. Do you reach for a bottle (or other mind-altering substance) when you’re stressed or upset? Using alcohol to deal with unpleasant feelings may be a sign that you are self-medicating for a psychological problem.

It’s not uncommon for people struggling with depression to isolate themselves or lose interest in activities they used to enjoy. Are you relaxing on the weekends instead of doing things like going out to eat, playing golf, or watching a movie? Do you avoid calls from family and friends? You may withdraw as a result of depression or other illnesses. On the other hand, a busy social schedule indicates a fear of being alone because there is too much time to think. If you constantly surround yourself with people in an attempt to avoid dealing with difficult thoughts, you may be hiding from a mental health condition.

When testing for depression or anxiety, many people only screen for mental and emotional symptoms such as depression and excessive anxiety. But mood disorders have many physical symptoms. Some unexpected physical symptoms of depression include chronic pain, significant weight gain or loss, and changes in appetite. An analysis shows that a high percentage of people seeking treatment for depression in a primary care setting show only physical symptoms. Physical symptoms of anxiety range from stomach upset or “nervousness” to chest pain, and chronic stress can cause headaches, weakness, and more. If you’re experiencing unexplained aches and pains or digestive issues, try zooming out to determine if these physical symptoms are related to your mental health.

Self-diagnosing a mood disorder is not easy, especially when your judgment is clouded by low self-esteem or feelings of anxiety. If you don’t feel like you can adequately take the depression/stress/anxiety test yourself, ask for feedback from someone you trust who has noticed changes in your mood or behavior.
