What Is The Difference Between Ssa And Ssi Benefits
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) are two separate government programs that provide cash assistance to people with disabilities. Each program is funded differently, and each is intended to help a different group of people. However, both programs use the same five-step criteria to determine if you qualify as disabled.

You use the same form to apply for both! Understandably, these two programs are often, and easily, confused, but there are important differences between SSI and SSDI that we explore in detail by answering the questions below. Let’s go now!
The elderly, blind and disabled who have low incomes and/or limited assets can get SSI. Children with disabilities may also qualify (see below.)
People who have worked and paid Social Security taxes can get SSDI. Not everyone who has worked is automatically eligible for SSDI. Your eligibility depends on how old you are, how long or how long you’ve worked, and how recently you’ve worked.

How Does Social Security Disability Affect Retirement Benefits?
Although children are not directly eligible for SSDI, they may be eligible for benefits through their parents if their parents can claim them as dependents. Any child who becomes disabled before age 22 may be eligible for SSDI benefits through their parents’ work record. Disabled children may also be eligible to receive a deceased parent’s SSDI benefits.
In 2020, the average SSDI payment was $1,258. Since SSDI depends on the recipient’s earnings record, some SSDI recipients received more than $1,228, and others, less.
They depend not only on the amount of your income, but also the types of income that the Social Security Administration (SSA) does or does not count against the amount of benefits you are eligible for. In general, the longer you can count, the lower your SSI benefit amount will be. The SSA defines SGA as work that brings in more than a certain dollar amount per month. In 2020, that amount is $1,260 for blind, disabled SSDI or SSI applicants, and $2,110 for blind SSDI applicants. (The SGA threshold does not apply to blind SSI applicants.)

Your income must be below this limit, after deducting any disability-related expenses, even if your disability allows you to do some type of paid work.
SSI has very strict income and resource limits, as it is a needs-based program. SSDI is an insurance program, so it depends on whether or not you have received permanent SSDI or if your case is still reviewed every few years (- see below).
Either way, you want to be VERY, VERY careful. You need to know how much you can bank, how much you can have in the way of resources, and if you can earn any income, how much you can earn without penalty.
The answer to this is complicated and depends a lot on each person’s individual situation. There are different types and amounts of income that the SSA considers when qualifying you for benefits. These include income from work; unearned income such as disability or unemployment benefits, interest, dividends or cash gifts; local income such as free food or accommodation; and income counted from the spouse or parent you live with.
Disability Determination: The Ssa Sequential Evaluation
This depends on whether you have permanent or temporary SSDI (- meaning, your case will always be reviewed). If you have permanent SSDI, you have no income or resource limits. If your case is reviewed (which is usually the case if you are under retirement age, or the SSA believes you can recover from your disability). If you have time, you need to check in with the Disability Benefits Planner or with the SSA to see what your income or resource limit is.
If your income and assets are low enough and you have a significant work history, you may qualify for benefits from both programs. When you apply for SSI and SSDI at the same time, the SSA calls it a concurrent claim.
When you receive both benefits, the SSA counts any money you receive from SSDI toward the income limit for SSI. Therefore, if you receive too much from SSDI, you may end up ineligible for SSI benefits.
SSDI includes Medicare Parts A-D, while SSI includes Medicaid. Medicaid is a jointly funded, federal and state health insurance program for low-income people. Medicaid covers certain children, as well as some or all of the elderly, blind, and disabled who are eligible to receive federal income assistance. Depending on where you live, your eligibility and access to certain types of services under Medicaid may vary.

This is complicated but not rocket science. I mean, you can wrap your head around it when you’re looking hard and close to the law.
It’s true, it’s really important to remember that not everyone in SSA knows the law themselves, and human error there is real. I can’t stress enough how important it is to do your homework on understanding the difference between the two benefits, understanding the premiums, income limits and income resources and penalties.
