Physiotherapist Laura Heathcote describes building relationships with coaches when it is necessary to influence a situation or recommend a specific course of action for an athlete. He also says that the relationship with his athletes is critical to getting them to complete their rehabilitation programs, because if they don’t trust you, they won’t do it. Sports and exercise psychologist Sarah Murray says similarly that if you get the relationship part with other people, you start talking to them about the science part and they’ll get the information on board. Soccer coach Richard Horner explains that without a strong relationship, you’ll never get to the point where you can address aspects of an athlete’s performance, or have the necessary conversations. In the complex world of sports journalism, Adam Leitch describes how important relationships are to your contacts, football managers and players talking to you and spreading the word. This has to be balanced with doing your job well and presenting information that isn’t in people’s best interests.

Referring to facts or making assumptions can be a major block to communication because these references or assumptions may be incorrect. Chris makes an important point that people will communicate in different ways, and you have to be creative when you send your message.
Strength and conditioning coach Will Abbott discusses the importance of being able to communicate with people at different levels, or with people of different backgrounds and backgrounds. In his role, he can provide information to football coaches, some who may have degrees in sports science or coaching, and some who do not. For example, there are challenges in guiding students who are hard of hearing in a canoe and ensuring that they are always standing so that they can see his face, thus enabling students to read his lips. He adapts his language for visually impaired students, using more descriptive language to create images for them.

Communication is about choosing your words carefully so others can understand them, but there are other factors that influence their impact. Our body language, eye contact, facial expressions and gestures all affect how our words are perceived by another person. If we’re not completely sure what we’re saying, or if we’re lying, we cover up our body language, or even cover our mouths behind our hands. Our facial expressions can create doubt, and our gestures can emphasize or weaken a point. Think about the impact of being tight-lipped when you say something. Paralinguistics refers to aspects of speech such as tone, volume and rhythm that can affect the meaning of what we say. By changing the tone of the message, we can create realism, sarcasm or even silliness.
The quality of your communication can be judged by the response it generates, and if that response is positive and to your liking, you are communicating effectively. If the response or results are different, you need to adapt your communication style to the recipient.
The most common message at the 2019 Conference of Champions was about listening and really listening! Listening is much more difficult than talking and you will find that most people prefer to talk. Listening is more than just letting people talk, listening requires you to be fully present and focused on what the other person is saying. If you’re thinking about what to say next or developing opinions about the other person, you’re not fully listening.
Interestingly, two of the people I interviewed said that even though they knew their inner personality types, the benefit was that they were good listeners. According to personal trainer Ronik Redelinghuis, being an introvert helps him to listen and remember what other people are saying. So he talks less and gets distracted, he asks people questions, and because people like to talk a lot, he can learn a lot about them. This, in turn, helps you understand them and become more comfortable with them. This can help develop working relationships.
