Narrator: Relations between Japan and the United States were strained in the years before Pearl Harbor. This began with the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931, and spread throughout the Chinese mainland, leading to the Second Sino-Japanese War between China and Japan in 1937. Japan then joined the Tripartite Pact of Berlin, forming an alliance with Germany and Italy. In 1940.
The war in Europe had opened up strategic opportunities for Japanese conquests in French-Indo China, British Malaysia and the invasion of European colonies such as Singapore, Dutch Indonesia and the Philippines.
After the Franco-Indo-China invasion in 1941, the United States froze Japanese assets in the United States and declared an embargo on petroleum shipments. Japanese military strategy was based on its unique geographical location in the Pacific Ocean and the relative weakness of its allied forces. The western half of the Pacific Ocean is filled with many islands, while the eastern half of the ocean is almost landlocked and therefore has usable bases except for Hawaii.

There were about 350,000 British, French, American, and Dutch troops in the entire Pacific west of Hawaii. Allied air power in the Pacific was weak and consisted mostly of obsolete aircraft.
The Japanese believed that they could quickly launch coordinated attacks from existing bases on certain Pacific islands and plan to overwhelm the Allied forces and establish a heavily fortified defensive perimeter. They believed that any American and British counteroffensive against this perimeter would be repulsed, and those nations would eventually seek a negotiated peace that would allow Japan to keep this newly acquired empire.
At 6.10 am on December 7th, the first wave of Japanese planes launched. At 6:45, USS Ward opened fire on a Japanese submarine off the coast of Hawaii. At 6:53 am, Ward reported that the sub was sinking, but it took time to decode the message. At 7:02, a radar station on Oahu saw an unidentified aircraft heading toward the island. However, the radar systems were not even a month old, and the lieutenant who received the alert thought it was a false alarm. By 7:40 AM, the first wave of Japanese planes reached Oahu, bypassing American early warning systems. Shortly thereafter, the Japanese Air Force commander ordered the attack.
The Japanese aircraft flew in two waves. The first wave hit the airfields and anti-aircraft defenses on the western side of the island, and about an hour later the second wave concentrated on the eastern side. Both waves met over Pearl Harbor.

In the harbor, ships at anchor made perfect targets for Japanese bombers. During the first thirty minutes of the attack, the battleships suffered heavy damage. Arizona was completely destroyed and Oklahoma rolled. California, Nevada and West Virginia were submerged in shallow water. However, three Pacific Fleet aircraft carriers were at sea during the attack, and the Japanese failed to destroy the island’s vital oil storage facilities. All but two battleships were decommissioned during the war, and the entire US naval strategy in the Pacific shifted to a reliance on aircraft carriers over battleships as a result.
The Japanese fleet of 67 ships was located about 200 miles north of Oahu. They launched dive bombs, torpedo bombs and fighter jets. 353 Japanese aircraft were involved in the attack, 29 of which were shot down. Only one participating Japanese ship survived to the end of the war.
In total, 2,404 US military personnel and civilians died. Of those casualties, 1,177 were on one ship—the USS Arizona, which was hit by an armor-piercing bomb and ignited more than a million pounds of gunpowder inside the ship. Sixty-eight civilians were also killed.
After the battle, fifteen individuals were awarded the Medal of Honor, and fifty-one were awarded the Navy Cross for their actions during the battle. The next day, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt addressed the United States, and the US Congress declared war on Japan. Three days later, Germany and Italy declared war on the United States. And the previously reluctant nation entered World War II.
