What are the most common reasons people are willing to move for a job? According to our survey of 1,000 adults, the most common reason was career advancement or the opportunity to earn more money (36.96%). Other reasons included the opportunity to be near friends or family (17.88%) or moving to a new department or office (15.48%).

Others expressed that their company had moved (13.79%), for various reasons (8.29%), or that their company had been acquired (7.59%).
There are various factors that motivate individuals to move long distances for their work. However, we wanted to collect more information to help clarify the whole picture. Now that we know why people seem to be moving, we want to know who was moving.
We found that individuals aged 25-34 (37.25%) and individuals aged 35-44 (23.78%) were most willing to move. This is likely because younger to mid-career professionals may be willing to do what is necessary to climb the ranks within their company.
Interestingly, only 17.78% of the youngest group, aged 18-25, said they had moved at this age. Those in the younger age group may still be finding their footing in a long-term position.

Compare that to older workers, such as individuals ages 45-54 and 54 and older who made up just 9.49% and 6.59% of the survey, respectively.
The majority of those who move for work do so for career advancement or a salary increase. The next most common reason is to be closer to family, friends or other relationships.
Younger and mid-career workers are more likely to relocate, while older, more established workers are less likely to relocate.
Does company size have any effect on whether workers will move? According to our data, workers appear willing to relocate regardless of the size of their company.

However, the largest proportion of transferred workers came from a company with 100-499 employees (23.18%). The next largest group came from companies with 50-99 workers (18.18%). The next group was small businesses, with 1-49 employees (17.48%).
While small and medium-sized companies mostly move their employees, larger companies seem to move their employees less frequently. 500-999 employees saw 16.18%, 1,000-4,999 employees saw 13.49%, and very large companies with more than 5,000 employees only saw 11.49% of employees move on.
Moving can be expensive, especially when moving across the country or long distances. Fortunately, most participants (64.14%) reported that they received some type of compensation package in exchange for relocation. However, compensation packages vary widely, and this still leaves 35.86% of workers bearing the cost themselves.

What Should An Employee Relocation Package Include?
Moving is stressful enough on its own, but add time constraints, and it’s easy for stress to skyrocket.
Searching for new housing, calculating costs and packing can be time consuming and stressful. This doesn’t include unpacking, getting to know your new area, and meeting new people.
Although the moving process is stressful and difficult, we are happy to report that the majority of people moved have overall positive feelings about their move (56.64%). 29.07% of respondents have a neutral view, and 14.29% have a negative view.
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed many attitudes surrounding the traditional workplace. With more employees working from home, we wanted to know how ideas around relocation have changed.

Moving to a new country is an exciting and stressful experience, especially when it comes to navigating the logistics of your move. For foreign professionals moving to the United States for work, one crucial aspect to consider is the relocation package offered by your employer.
A “relocation package” is a package of funds, benefits and/or support that employers typically provide to ensure a smooth move for their employees who are relocating.
Employee Relocation Packages: Costs And Benefits
In this article, we’ll explore what you can typically expect from a US employer relocation package, including compensation, services and other perks, along with how and when to negotiate with your employer.
Relocation packages are typically offered by companies relocating employees from abroad, but different employers offer a different mix of compensation, services, and other perks.
Here’s an overview of some of the most common things included in a moving package to the United States.
Most moving packages will cover the costs of moving you and your personal belongings from your current location to the new location.
Temporary Living + Housing Services For Relocating Employees
In addition to covering moving costs like flights or car rentals, this often involves hiring a moving company or professional moving service to handle the logistics of packing, shipping and unpacking your belongings at your new home.
It is also common for employers to offer temporary housing to transferred employees, either through a company apartment, an AirBnb allowance, or other temporary arrangements.
Standard policies across industries typically include a minimum of 2-4 weeks of temporary housing. However, this time period is often one of the easiest items to negotiate, since companies usually have open inventory or can offer significantly discounted rates on short-term housing options.
Business owners may offer marketing and sales support to sell your home or compensate you for money lost in a quick sale, especially if you’ll be moving on a tight timeline. If you are a tenant, employers may pay contractual penalties for early termination of your tenancy.

Companies often connect relocating employees with preferred third-party “relocation providers,” which are organizations that specialize in helping people and families transition to a new location seamlessly.
For those moving from international locations, a moving service provider or other third-party agency will usually assist with other elements to ensure a smooth international move, such as:
Relocation packages are typically offered in the form of a “lump sum,” expense reimbursement, or a combination of the two.
With a “lump sum” moving package, often called a “moving bonus,” your company will give you a sum of money to use as you see fit on your move. They may or may not connect you with preferred moving companies, housing options, and transportation providers, but you ultimately choose how and when you spend money.

Note that “lump sum” moving packages are treated as taxable income. Therefore, taxes are usually withheld from employees’ bonus before receiving the net amount to spend. For example, if the agreed upon relocation package is $4,000, but the expected income taxes (federal, state, and FICA) are 30%, $1,200 will be removed and the employee will receive only $2,800.
Some employers will “gross” the relocation package amount to cover any expected income taxes. If you are offered a ‘lump’ sum, be sure to find out if this is an option when negotiating with your employer.
In other cases, an employer will allow its employees to reimburse transportation expenses such as flights, transportation fees, lodging, and more — or even send these expenses directly to a company card. This reimbursement policy may come with certain conditions, such as the specific providers you can use or the amount of money you can spend.
In some cases, you can negotiate a combination of these two approaches. For example, you can offset flight costs and bill the carrier directly with your company card, but use the remaining “lump amount” of money to spend (or save) on things outside of your tightly defined reimbursement policy.
How To Decide Whether To Relocate For A Job
If you believe that some aspect of the relocation package is insufficient or missing, you have the right to negotiate with your employer.
Like any other negotiation with your offer, this is best done after receiving your offer, but before accepting it.
Before entering negotiations, it is important to conduct thorough research to understand standard practices and benefits offered in your industry, seniority level and region.
During negotiations, be clear about your must-haves and must-haves, given your current personal and financial circumstances, and tailor your negotiations accordingly. For example, if you are single and don’t have a lot of belongings, you can
