Green supply chain management (GSCM) can be defined as the integration of environmental issues into an organization’s integrated approach to supply chain management (SCM). This article investigates the role of ports in blackening the supply chain in two ways. First, areas of action to further the port’s GSCM objectives are identified and consolidated. The proposed typology includes five activity groups, namely, green shipping; green port development and operation; internal green software; ports and the circular economy; and, activities in the field of knowledge development and information sharing. In the empirical part of the paper, this typology is used to analyze green initiatives and initiatives developed by market players and port authorities in the Rhine-Scheldt Delta, a port region. -the largest European ship in terms of shipping. This structured overview of green initiatives and initiatives shows that these ports are hotspots for GSCM activities, but progress in some areas remains slow. The second part of the analysis focuses on the attitudes and perspectives of the actors related to the port towards the simplification of the supply chain related to the port. A large-scale survey carried out in the logistics industry and the Belgian and Dutch ports revealed that green things have been installed by companies between 2010 and now. The results provide a clear view of the various drivers and barriers to supply chain optimization. In addition, you can still see the gap between words and deeds. The study points to the role of the government as a catalyst or soft implementer for change, and calls for continuity and coherence in government policies. This paper is the first study to provide a comprehensive analysis of the activities, practices and perspectives of port-related actors in a specific port region.

In the past decade, green supply chain management (GSCM) has evolved due to the integration of environmental issues into the organizational practices of supply chain management. Stricter regulatory requirements, and strong demands for a cleaner and more sustainable environment by the community at large, are pushing GSCM practices to the next level. The sense of urgency increases with environmental degradation, for example, dwindling resources, the effects of climate change, and increased pollution. As a node in the global supply chain, the port creates an impact on the environment through its various activities related to cargo handling, connection to the transport network maritime and land, industrial and semi-industrial activities, logistics and distribution activities, and energy production and distribution. The emergence of the ‘green port’ concept is closely related to the growing awareness of port actors.
