Is It Possible To Conceive Before Ovulation

Is It Possible To Conceive Before Ovulation – When trying to conceive (TTC), you should have as much sex as possible to maximize your chances. However, timing is still the key to hitting the jackpot (read: pregnant).

If you’re a fan of steak and eggs, you’re also probably aware that timing is everything when it comes to bringing out the two components of this classic brunch dish. No one wants to chew their jaws off an overcooked steak before their morning coffee starts. And if the yolk is not runny? One’s mouth will surely run.

Couples who TTC face the same situation. While they should have sex before, during, and after ovulation (basically, as much as possible) for the highest chance of success, getting the timing right is also important. Women usually ovulate only once a month, so you need to make extra hay during that short period of time.

How Long Does It Take To Get Pregnant?

What should a couple do? What are women’s real chances of getting pregnant outside this important window? It’s time to find out, and the results may surprise you more than you think.

Before diving into the probability of conceiving at various stages of the menstrual cycle, here’s a quick overview of what ovulation is. This process involves a mature egg being released from the ovary and making its way to the fallopian tube. The mature egg then sits there for about 12 to 24 hours, and this is prime time for fertilization [1].

Assuming an average menstrual cycle of 28 days, ovulation occurs approximately 14 days before your next menstrual cycle begins. This is a yardstick that you and your partner can use when you plan. If you want to be more sure, consider the twoplus Ovulation Test Kit. Whether you’re at home or out, this compact test kit gives you a simple, quick and accurate prediction of your ovulation cycle.

Also, your body tells you when you will ovulate. This is a vaginal secretion, also known as cervical mucus, that becomes clear and stretchy (like egg white) around ovulation [2]. After ovulation, your cervical mucus either clears or becomes thick and cloudy. In addition, your basal body temperature rises slightly during ovulation.

When Is The Best Time To Get Pregnant?

Funnily enough, your chances of getting pregnant in the days leading up to ovulation are at their highest. To be precise, this would be the second half of the follicular phase. That’s because sperm can survive in your reproductive system for up to 5 days [3]. Having sex during this time ensures that there are sperms waiting for you once you ovulate.

A 2018 study conducted in the United States with more than 98,000 women provided the following figures regarding the probability of pregnancy during a woman’s fertile period [4]:

For TTC women, it is important that you know your menstrual cycle. According to this particular study, the probability of getting pregnant before ovulation is 42%. Take advantage of this information to make your nightly struggle under the sheets more efficient.

At this point, you must be thinking that your chances of getting pregnant during ovulation must be higher right? Unfortunately, that’s not the case because in an ideal scenario, live sperm should already be in the fallopian tubes when ovulation occurs. After all, it takes some time for sperm to leave the vagina and fallopian tubes.

When Are You The Most Fertile?

In the same study mentioned above, the probability of getting pregnant on the day of ovulation was only 20% [4]. That’s about the same as 4 days before ovulation, so the proof is definitely in the pudding. Not only is the chance of conception lower on the day of ovulation itself, this exact day cannot be determined with full accuracy every month.

You and your partner may find it easier to do it regularly in the week before ovulation. Furthermore, a large number of couples out there do not have sex just to get pregnant. This is because it can potentially lead to a number of problems, including decreased libido and performance anxiety.

This may seem like a no-brainer but rest assured that all hope is not lost if you and your partner miss a week of conceiving. Remember, after ovulation occurs, the egg will be in the fallopian tube for 12 to 24 hours before it disintegrates. This is also known as the beginning of the luteal phase.

When Is The Best Time To Conceive?

Regardless, you can still do well to give it a shot (literally and figuratively). There is a chance of getting pregnant and you also don’t want to rule out that you and your partner may have made a mistake when determining your ovulation day. What’s more, there is also the possibility that your body will release a second egg, although this is not a common occurrence [5].

For couples who TTC before, during and after ovulation, it’s a numbers game through and through. Having regular sex is the best way to increase your chances of getting pregnant, but you and your partner may not have the time or energy for this every month. This is especially true when you are older or have a busy schedule for the month.

Therefore, having full knowledge of your menstrual cycle each month is half the battle won. You and your partner will have an easier time planning when you do the devil tango the most. Not only will this keep you both motivated, you’ll also be reassured by the fact that you’re doing your best when it counts the most.

And if you’re really pressed for time each month, just carve out 1 or 2 hours in the last 3 days before ovulation. The same goes for the express pass that you and your partner will get. Hopefully, this will lead to a positive result on your pregnancy test and what better way to celebrate the morning after than with a plate of steak & eggs?
