Where’s My Refund?
Virtually everyone uses the regular Form 1040, but there are also three common schedules that you may or may not have to adhere to depending on your tax situation and whether you want to claim certain deductions and credits. Some people may not need to present any of these schedules, while others may need to present more.
The standard Form 1040 tax return discussed above is what most individual taxpayers will need to file during tax season. However, there are a few other 1040 forms you may need to know about, including Form 1040-SR for seniors.
Form 1040-ES can help freelancers or self-employed people calculate their estimated quarterly taxes. This form can also be used to estimate taxes on income that are not subject to withholding (for example, dividends or interest). You’ll probably also need to fill it out if you choose not to withhold taxes on any unemployment or Social Security benefits you received.
This form may need to be completed by nonresident aliens who do business or commerce within the U.S., representatives of a trust and/or estate who are required to file a 1040-NR, or a representative of a deceased person who would have been required to file fill out a 1040-NR.

Form 1040-SR is a version of Form 1040 for people age 65 and older. The basic differences between the 1040-SR tax form and the regular 1040 tax form are cosmetic: the 1040-SR has a different color scheme, a larger font, and a built-in standard deduction table (which may help more people over 65 years to claim your larger standard deduction).
If you end up owing the IRS on your return, you can choose to pay the balance by mail (rather than electronically) with your return. But you will need Form 1040-V, also called a “Payment Voucher,” to do this. Most people choose to pay their tax bills online for convenience.
Form 1040-X is also commonly called an amended tax return. You will need to fill out this form if you make a mistake – such as forgetting to include additional income – on your original return.
