The VA system looks at what happened to you while you were in the military and the medical diagnoses that resulted from those incidents. It then “scores” you based on a set list of impairment percentages for each of the diagnoses or conditions you are found to have, assigning a specific percentage to the degree of your disability, ranging from 10% to 100%. The Veterans Administration then pays benefits based on that level of depreciation, ranging from just over $100 to over $3,000 a month.
Most disabled veterans have a number of different conditions that qualify for a rating. The VA will assign a separate individual rating to each impairment, say for example 10% for a bad knee, 20% for a bad back, and 50% for PTSD. It will then use a table that takes into account each of these individual ratings to arrive at an overall overall rating. This doesn’t mean that your individual ratings are simply added up; Even if the sum of your individual scores exceeds 100%, this does not mean that your overall rating will be 100%. Your overall score depends on the type and severity of each individual score.
The SSA system doesn’t care much about when or how your violations occurred, or even what your official medical diagnosis was. They are primarily concerned with the functional consequences of your medical and mental condition. In short, if you are too ill (mentally, physically, or both) to work more than the minimum amount, you may qualify for benefits. The whole system is much more complex, but that’s the gist of it. But the question of what type of benefits (SSDI or SSI) is a completely different question. But if you are unable to work and qualify for one or both of these programs, you may receive benefits.
Additionally, the SSA system does not take partial or percentage disability into account. You are either completely disabled (and eligible for benefits) or not disabled (and not eligible for benefits). There is no middle ground, nor is there a “sliding scale” for determining whether a violation is more or less serious. Your benefit is based on the amount you paid into the system while working, not how sick you are now. On average, SSD beneficiaries will receive about $1,280 per month as of 2021.

To be eligible for Social Security benefits, a veteran must have a condition that prevents them from obtaining significant gainful employment. In 2022, Social Security will consider any job earning more than $1,350 a month to be substantial income. In 2023, the gross income limit will be $1,470 per month.
Unlike Social Security disability, a veteran receiving any type of VA benefit other than Total Disability Individual Unemployment (TDIU) can work and still receive VA service-connected compensation. If the veteran is currently working and applies for Social Security Disability Insurance, the claim will likely be denied based on earned income.
