I’m here to help you break down the differences so you understand what you should buy. It’s actually quite simple!

The main difference is their concentration level. The amount of oil in each fragrance helps determine the strength of its fragrance and how long the fragrance lasts on your skin. But before we get to the concentrations, let’s talk about the types of oils used:

What Is The Difference Between 17% Oil And 30% Oil Perfume?
Fragrance strengths can be very confusing. The simple answer is that the perfume has a much higher concentration of real perfume and lasts longer compared to its counterparts.
Fragrances are mostly made from a mixture of alcohol (ethanol), water and fragrance oils (smelly substances). The higher the concentration of these oils (also called “juice” in fragrance expert circles), the stronger the scent, the longer it lasts, and the more expensive the bottle.
The perfume has somewhere between 20% and 40% fragrance perfume ingredients and should last from morning to night – usually six to eight hours and sometimes into the next day.
Perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, the nose behind Eau Noire Christian Dior and Carven Le Parfum, recommends dabbing perfume on the skin and never rubbing it in.
Eau De Parfum, Eau De Toilette Or Eau De Cologne ?
Perfumes are more suitable for people with dry and sensitive skin because they have less alcohol and do not dry out the skin as much.
Eau de parfum, also known as EDP, has a 10 to 20% concentration of oils and lasts for four to five hours.
Some say it is the best choice because it lasts longer than EDT but is cheaper than parfum.
The EDP is for everyday wear as it is less intense so even if you overdo it, it lightens up quite quickly or you can layer it to intensify the scent.
Eau De Toilette Vs. Eau De Parfum: What’s The Difference?
Eau de toilette (EDT) contains 5 to 15% of perfume ingredients and lasts for two to three hours. Fragrance experts also consider it a day wear.
“Perfect for work, interviews, when you want to wear a fragrance for your personal pleasure, not to be ‘noticed’,” said Josephine Fairley, co-founder of the perfume company.
For price comparison, a bottle of Chanel No5 perfume in a 30ml bottle at Myer costs $470, a 50ml bottle of Chanel No5 Eau de Parfum costs $165, while a 50ml bottle of Chanel No5 Eau de Toilette costs $135.
Chanel says that “the perfume is the most precious version of the fragrance” and the eau de toilette is the “warm and bright version of the original fragrance”.

Usually, the perfume ingredients are mixed with a solvent, which is typically ethanol or a mixture of ethanol and water. These ingredients are pre-determined by the expert in perfume development (sometimes called the “nose”).
